There are many theories regarding their origin. One legend relates that Parashurama Rama, 6th incarnation of Vishnu wanted to massacre the Kshatriyas and caused every Kshatriya woman to miscarry.

However, some women escaped and took shelter in Brahmin highest priestly caste houses. The Brahmin declared them to be Brahmin and even ate with them in order to show Parashurama that the Kshatriya women were from their caste, and thus saved them. According to this story, the children born of these women became the Khatri. The language spoken by the Khatri people varies from state to state.

However, in the state of Jammu and Kashmir, they also speak Dogri and Bhadrawahi. Hindi is the primary language in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh and it is written in the Devanagari script. Most Khatri are also fluent in Hindi language and many educated Khatri speak English.

The Khatri are businessmen, traders, professional moneylenders and financiers. Their business pursuits range from owning and operating village shops to being major wholesale traders and industrialists. However, there are also some who practice agriculture and rear animals.

Many are contractors and transporters, while a few are employed in government and private sectors. The Khatri of Gujarat are known for their cloth which they print and dye as well as the specialized art of bandhini tying and dyeing fabricswhile in Maharashtra they are the traditional weavers of silk saris, especially the famous paithani saris.

The Khatri are also engineers, doctors, scientists, army, police, administrators, politicians and creative artists. Generally, they are highly literate. They encourage both sons and daughters to study and graduate. The Khatri use modern medicine as well as indigenous medicines. They practice family planning.

Official development programs have brought numerous opportunities to them and they make full use of the schemes offered relating to subsidized loans and irrigation facilities; and made optimum use of the Public Distribution System and national banks for personal savings and obtaining loans for commercial purposes.

Kirpal Singh Dardi, the respective figures are over 25 overlapping with Brahmins and over overlapping with other Kshatriyas and Rajputs.

Mohana Rathod, a year-old daayansustains herself by draining the life-force of her victims. She enchants Mridul Rathod and marries him. They have two children, Ansh and Kajal. Piya exposes Mohana's intentions to the Rathods, after which Ansh expels Mohana. Later, Piya and Ansh consummate their marriage. Dola, Mohana's twin sister and Ruby's mother, a two-headed daayan who rules the Swapna-Lohk Dream World and unleashes horror frightens the Rathods and threatens to kill Ansh.

The Rathods attack Dola using Makarketh flowers on the muhurta of Makar Sankranti and kill her, only to be revived by Mohana. The sisters fool Piya into transferring her serpentine powers to Ansh. Believing that Piya is devoid of powers, the sisters try to burn her alive using Tharal-agni a type of fuel. Piya invokes Devi-Maa for help. Mohana and Dola are turned into stone statues, but are freed by Ruby.

Denzil Ibbetsonwho wrote the Report for the Indian census ofnotes that "The Aroras are often called Roras in the east of the Panjab". However, he considers the community calling itself Ror to be distinct from the Punjabi Arora, stating that "I can hardly believe that the frank and stalwart Ror is of the same origin as the Arora" even though they shared a common account of their origin.

The account was that in the past they had denied their original status in order to avoid persecution, and were in fact "Rajputs who escaped the fury of Paras Ram Parashuram by stating that their caste was aur or 'another'", from which word their name came. According to Ibbetson, the belief of the Punjabi community is that in fleeing the persecution there was at some point a bifurcation, with some members moving north and others moving south.

From this arose the two major endogamous divisions within the Arora, respectively known as Uttradhi and Dakhna, which in turn had subdivisions. Rose is more specific, considering this to be the belief of the Arora of Gujaratwho maintain that Paras Ram pushed the community towards Multanwhere they founded the town of Arorkot[b] probably near to the present day Rohri. That town was subsequently cursed and its inhabitants fled in different directions through its north, south and west gates. While Rose agrees with Ibbetson that the Dakhna division is sometimes thought to include a subdivision called Dahra, he states that the Dahra went westwards, rather than south, and that there is also another major division known as the Sindhi of Sindh.

For the purposes of his report on the census, Ibbetson treats the Arora as a separate community from that of the Khatri, although similarly one of the "great mercantile castes". It is presumed that they migrated from Sindh or Multan to Lahoreand then to Amritsar.

This is inferred from the fact that, after a very long stay in the central Punjab, they ceased to speak their Lahnda dialect. The Arora Sikhs are mostly found in big towns, especially in Amritsar. They were living there even before independence. Their Hindu counterparts, the majority of whom migrated from Pakistan, arrived in India in Aroras not only have survived but have prospered.

The Amritsar Gazetteer claims Aroras are very energetic and intelligent. They are mostly engaged in trade and industry. They are superior in business acumen to their counterparts settled in the district. A good number of them have also joined public and private services.
